This seems to be a common issue, discussed often on the Plex forums: In my case the bad update is Version 1., but this seems to be a recurring issue for multiple other versions as well. Very annoying to try to watch media only to find that the Plex server is not running. The automatic update feature is hitting this same problem, and thus regularly quits my Plex server and never restarts it. It alerts me again to "Download Updates" and "Install Update" - but the update never works. When I manually open Plex again, it boots up immediately as if nothing happened. The server "Plex" is installing an update Plex immediately quits, and the spinner says that the update is installing: or higher.I want to update Plex via the "Install Update" button within General settings: You’ll know you’re up to date when the version number reads 1. While it’s unclear why this app wasn’t updating on its own, updating it manually seems to fix this issue. The Plex Media Server app is separate from the standard Plex Android TV app, but still updates through the Play Store. Multiple users noted that the issue seemed to start late last year and persisted for some users until now. The Plex Media Server app was, for some reason, not automatically updating on Shield TV devices, eventually silently breaking the functionality. Thankfully, the solution turned out to be hiding just beneath the surface. Logging out, clearing cache, and various other troubleshooting fixes weren’t doing the trick. Reported on Nvidia’s forums as well as the Plex forums, some users had noticed that their servers were breaking with no obvious culprit. Unfortunately, that’s been broken for some users for a while, but a new update apparently fixes the problem. One of the most useful features of the Android TV-powered Nvidia Shield TV is the ability to use it as a Plex server pretty quickly and easily.
